PwC Is Merging Its US and India Advisory Arms. AI Is Why.

PwC US and PwC India will pool their consulting and advisory businesses into a single joint venture, closing in the first half of 2027. The structure says more about what AI is doing to professional services than the press release does.

PwC Is Merging Its US and India Advisory Arms. AI Is Why.

PwC announced on Sunday that its US and India firms will pool their advisory businesses into a single joint venture. PwC India's Consulting arm and the India-based advisory capabilities of PwC US will sit on one platform, jointly owned and governed by both firms. Sanjeev Krishan, currently Chairperson of PwC India, becomes the new venture's CEO. Completion is expected in the first half of 2027, subject to regulatory clearances. Neither firm disclosed a deal value.

What is actually being combined

The structure matters more than the headline here.

This is not PwC US buying delivery capacity in India, and it is not PwC India winning a bigger slice of offshore work. Both of those already existed. What changes is that the two sit under one P&L instead of two.

The service span runs from strategy and transformation through technology, engineering and AI. PwC's own framing is that clients have stopped wanting to think about markets, capabilities and delivery as separate pieces — Paul Griggs, PwC US Senior Partner and CEO, put it in roughly those terms.

Until the deal closes, both firms keep operating through their existing structures and client-service arrangements.

The GCC angle is the real target

The release names Global Capability Centers explicitly. US-headquartered enterprises running GCCs in India are the client type this platform is built for, alongside clients moving across major trade corridors.

That is a specific bet, and a reasonable one. The GCC stopped being a cost centre with a reporting line to a US parent some years ago. For a lot of enterprises it is now where the engineering happens, where the data sits, and increasingly where AI systems get built and run. A firm that advises the US parent and separately delivers from India is selling two halves of a conversation.

Why the timing is not a coincidence

The Financial Times framed this as PwC shaking up its Indian operations with an AI threat looming over consulting. Worth sitting with rather than waving off.

Professional services prices leverage: a few senior people, many junior people, billed by the hour. AI compresses exactly the layer that model rests on. Research, first-draft analysis, documentation, testing, reconciliation — that is what fills the bottom of the pyramid, and it is what agents are getting competent at fastest.

If the pyramid flattens, scale has to come from somewhere else. Merging two advisory businesses into one platform is one answer. Whether it is the right answer will not be visible until 2028 at the earliest.

What I would watch

Does the partner model change? A joint venture that keeps two separate partner tracks has merged a balance sheet, not a firm. The release talks about the capability and client perimeter for partners going up. That is the part to hold them to.

Does AI show up as a service line or as delivery? Every firm sells AI advisory now. The interesting version is a firm whose own delivery costs fall because its people work differently. Those are not the same thing, and they get described with the same words.

Does anyone follow? PwC is the first of the big four to restructure its India relationship this way. If Deloitte, EY or KPMG announce something structurally similar inside eighteen months, this was a read of where the industry is going. If nobody does, it was a read of PwC's own position.

For Indian enterprises the practical effect is narrower than the announcement suggests, at least at first. Domestic clients get a shorter path to global capabilities. Useful. Not a change in what consulting costs or how it is bought.
